Key Features

💤

Sleep Stage Tracking

Breaks your night into light, deep, and REM sleep with a morning readiness score that tells you how recovered you are.

❤️

24/7 HRV Monitoring

Continuous heart rate variability data throughout the day. Higher HRV means better recovery, lower means your body is still catching up.

🏃

Built-in GPS

Dual-band GPS tracks outdoor runs and rides without needing your phone along for the trip.

Stainless Steel Build

Polished steel frame with an AMOLED display, looks more like a dress watch than a fitness tracker.

Our Experience

If you’ve seen the Amazfit Active 2 Round (already reviewed here), the Square version shares most of the same tech in a different body. The square AMOLED screen gives you more screen real estate for data, and the stainless steel frame makes it feel more premium on the wrist.

For recovery tracking, the Active 2 Square hits the marks that matter. Sleep staging is solid, it reliably distinguishes between deep and REM cycles, and the morning readiness score gives you a quick green/yellow/red on whether you should push hard or back off. HRV trends over time are where this gets useful: after a couple weeks, you start seeing how training load, alcohol, and late nights affect your baseline.

The square screen is a real plus for data-heavy watch faces. You can fit workout stats, HRV, sleep score, and step count on one face without squinting. The always-on display works well in bright sunlight too.

Battery life runs about 10 days with normal use, or around 5 with heavy GPS usage. Not class-leading, but respectable for a watch with an always-on AMOLED display. Charging takes about 2 hours from empty.

Pros & Cons

What We Liked

  • HRV and sleep tracking rival watches costing twice as much
  • Stainless steel body looks polished enough for everyday wear
  • Square AMOLED display shows more data at a glance
  • GPS works without carrying your phone

Worth Knowing

  • Battery dips to ~5 days with heavy GPS use
  • Zepp app has a learning curve if you’re coming from Garmin or Apple
  • No offline music storage

Frequently Asked Questions

How does sleep tracking compare to the Amazfit Active 2 Round?

Identical sensors and algorithms. The only difference is the screen shape and case material, the Square uses stainless steel vs. aluminum on the Round.

Is the Zepp app good for recovery tracking?

It’s gotten much better. The readiness score and HRV trends are genuinely useful. The interface still isn’t as polished as Apple Health or Garmin Connect, but the data is there.

Final Verdict

The Amazfit Active 2 Square is a strong value play for recovery-focused tracking. You get HRV monitoring, detailed sleep staging, and GPS in a stainless steel package for $115. It won’t replace a Garmin for serious athletes, but for daily recovery tracking and workout logging, it punches well above its price point.
