This guide covers the basic rules, a body area placement map and the spots you should always avoid.

Placement Basics

The TENS 7000 has two channels, so you can run up to four pads. Put the pads on clean, dry skin around the sore muscle, a few inches apart, so the current travels across the painful area. Always switch the unit off before moving or removing pads.

Start at the lowest intensity and turn it up slowly until you feel a strong but comfortable tingle. It should never hurt or make muscles cramp hard.

Tips for Better Sessions

Wipe skin with soap and water first, and skip lotion. Store pads on their plastic sheet so they stay sticky. Replace pads once they stop sticking well. If one spot feels sharp, the pad is probably peeling or too close to its partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should TENS pads be?

Keep pads at least about an inch apart and usually a few inches apart, around the sore area rather than right on top of each other. Pads that touch can cause uncomfortable hot spots.

Where should you never put TENS pads?

Do not place pads on the front or sides of the neck, across the chest or heart, on the head, over broken or numb skin, or over the spine itself. Do not use TENS if you have a pacemaker, are pregnant, or have epilepsy unless your doctor says it is fine.

How long should a TENS 7000 session last?

The TENS 7000 has timed sessions up to 60 minutes. Many people start with 20 to 30 minutes and see how they feel. Follow the manual and your clinician’s advice.

The Bottom Line

Surround the pain, keep pads a few inches apart, start low and build slowly. Avoid the neck, chest, head and spine, and check with your doctor if you have a heart device or other medical condition.
